The Fairmont Empress Hotel
721 Government Street, Victoria, British Columbia V8W 1W5, Canada

Tripadvisor Reviews of The Fairmont Empress Hotel - 4*

The Empress is an historic landmark in Victoria's Inner Harbour. The hotel itself opened on January 20, 1908 and has since, with consummate elegance, hosted the wealthy and famous, amidst many thousands of regular folk.

In 1965 this "heart and soul of Victoria" was under threat of demolition due to its age and condition. After the public had voiced its opinion, the decision was instead made to embark upon a massive renovation project.

The Empress is undergoing another complete renovation (2015 - 2016); guests state (via TripAdvisor) that the inconveniences are slight.

Huntingdon Hotel

Tripadvisor Reviews of Huntingdon Manor Hotel

Step off the Coho Ferry. Walk 1/2 block to the right and then 1 block to the left. It's hard to get more convenient than this for the price (CAD$99/night), especially for a Victoria BC hotel within the Inner Harbour district.

The Gatsby Mansion is over 100 years old; the Hotel itself dates back years, however in both cases, renovations have ensured the rooms are warm and inviting. The floor in our room was wooden (or perhaps Pergo), which might have been an issue, except slippers were also provided. No problem!

Strathcona Hotel

Strathcona Hotel, downtown Victoria BC

919 Douglas Street, Victoria BC V8W 2C2
1-800-663-7476; 1-250-383-7137

Tripadvisor Reviews of The Strathcona Hotel

The Strathcona is a "Family-owned and Operated Entertainment Center," a full-service Victoria BC hotel situated downtown in a renovated gold-rush-era building. In addition to the hotel and a liquor store, the Strathcona also includes these facilities:

  • Distrikt: A premier nightclub hosting talented acts brought to the city
  • Sticky Wicket: A cricket-themed pub offering international and craft beers and "great food." Hours: 11:30 a.m. - 2 a.m.
  • The Clubhouse: Serving daytime business lunch, and then morphing into a "late night high energy club" with a wide range of menu items. Hours: 12 noon - 2 a.m.
  • Big Bad John's: Characterized as a hillbilly bar where you can "throw your peanut shells on the floor." Hours: 12 noon - 2 a.m.
  • Games Room: Bar and pub. Play darts, pool, backgammon, and chess until 2 am, while watching your favorite sports teams on multiple large screens.
  • The Rooftop Patio, a unique surf-themed pub. Where else on Vancouver Island can you find a scene right out of Venice Beach CA or the Hawaiian Islands? Enjoy a meal and a drink literally on the rooftop, and then step onto the adjoining sandy courts for a few games of sand volleyball. Or, the other way around!

Quality Inn Waddling Dog (in Central Saanich)

Quality Inn Waddling Dog Website

TripAdvisor reviews of Quality Inn Waddling Dog

The Waddling Dog Inn is probably 30 minutes from Victoria on the Saanich Peninsula, but it is also only 3.9 miles east of Butchart Gardens.  I prowled through Butchart Gardens all afternoon, and then stayed here so I could return and enjoy the Gardens again during the quiet morning hours.

It is situated along Highway 17, and is very easy to find. This Victoria BC hotel has a rustic ambiance, and the stay was lovely. The sports-bar eatery attached to the hotel serves excellent food and craft beer.

Victoria BC Hostels

Turtle Hostel

Turtle Hostel
1608 Quadra St., Victoria, BC
1-250-381-3210 / 1-877-381-3210

Tripadvisor Reviews of Turtle Hostel - 2*

We're including this one as a last resort. Yes, this place is cute and funky from the outside, the stay won't break the bank, and the location is downtown. But, carefully check the reviews on this one. (You'll thank me for that tip!) For shared dorm to private double room: $20-$32 CAD - (approx. $16-$26 USD).

By staying in a Victoria BC hotel that is downtown, you'll have the advantage of walking to as many places as possible. But even so, there is so much to do all around the city and up into the Saanich Peninsula, if you have the time, you'll still need that car rental.

Victoria also offers terrific public transportation to get to outlying areas, like Butchart Gardens and the wineries and cider houses on the Saanich Peninsula. You can't miss no matter where you choose to stay.

Don't forget that prices are listed in Canadian Dollars so be sure to figure that into your costs. (Get current exchange rates by googling CAD vs USD, or your country's currency.)
